Weather hurricane

Teaching weather often is an expectation at the upper elementary grades (4/5). For many students, this may be the last formal weather education they receive unless they take a general Earth Science elective in high school. Really understanding weather requires some concerted study with a bit more science and math nder your belt. While not crucial to grades 4/5, the American Meteorological Society offers an excellent online/ftf course called Datastreme. Datastreme will give you a great general science brush-up and some real weather knowledge! A great resource for weather studies, especially extreme weather events, is the National Weather Service. The NWS is where I get my forecasts - the same place as the Weather Channel and your local TV meteorologist. Here in New Hampshire, we have an amazing resource: The Mount Washington Observatory. The 'Obs' also offers excellent educational outreach. In New Hampshire and many states, there is usually a state climatologist. The climatologist can often direct you to other resources. The Weather Underground is a commercial compendium of weather information. Click on any of the highlighted items to go to that web page. Megan O'Leary is a fifth grade teacher in Truro, MA - she is even more fanatic about weather than I am. Her web links are extensive and there are many resources on her classroom site at http://www.truromass.org/classrooms/Weathernew.htm .
